Getting to Know Different Procedures

LASIK Eye Surgery

Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) is the most well-known laser refractive surgery option to correct vision.

During the procedure, your surgeon will use a precision instrument to create a small flap to access the part of your cornea that requires reshaping. Using the excimer laser, your surgeon removes tiny amounts of corneal tissue to precisely correct your refractive error. Once the reshaping process is complete, your surgeon carefully places the flap back into place to heal.

LASIK is a quick and efficient procedure that can usually be completed in 30 minutes or less. It usually takes around 2 to 3 months for your eyes to fully heal and your vision to stabilize following your surgery.

SMILE Eye Surgery

Small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) is a procedure that involves reshaping the cornea by removing the small lens from the central corneal layer with a precision laser. The laser sculpts a disc-shaped piece of cornea below the surface of the eye, known as the lenticule.

This procedure extracts the lenticule through 4 small incisions on the corneal surface that give your surgeon access to the lenticule to reshape the cornea. Patients usually heal over a few days.

SMILE is a minimally invasive procedure that helps treat myopia (nearsightedness) and astigmatism.

Post-Surgery Care

Your vision may not be clear immediately following your laser eye surgery procedure. It can take some time before your eyes fully heal and your vision stabilizes.
